What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and posture. It is caused by a problem with the developing brain, often before or around the time of birth, that changes the way messages travel between the brain and the muscles. It is not a disease and it does not get worse over time, but the way it affects a child can change as they grow, which is why ongoing physiotherapy is so valuable.

Cerebral palsy affects each child differently. Some children have mild involvement in one limb, while others are affected across the whole body. The main types include:

Spastic CP (tight, stiff muscles) Dyskinetic CP (uncontrolled movements) Ataxic CP (balance & coordination) Mixed CP Hemiplegia (one side) Diplegia (mainly legs) Quadriplegia (all four limbs) Varying levels of mobility

Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common type, where muscles become tight and stiff, making movement effortful. Whatever the type, a personalised physiotherapy programme can help your child move more comfortably and make the most of their abilities.

How Cerebral Palsy Affects Movement

Depending on the type and severity, a child with cerebral palsy may experience stiff or tight muscles (spasticity), difficulty with balance and coordination, challenges with sitting, standing or walking, and problems with posture. Over time, tight muscles can pull on growing bones and joints and, without support, lead to contractures where a joint becomes fixed and hard to move. Good physiotherapy works to keep muscles and joints as supple and functional as possible.

How Physiotherapy Helps

Physiotherapy is one of the cornerstones of cerebral palsy care. It cannot undo the change in the brain, but it can profoundly influence how well the body moves and how comfortable and independent a child can be. By guiding the right movements, strengthening key muscles and managing tightness, physiotherapy helps children reach their potential and take part more fully in family life.

We cannot change the diagnosis, but with steady, skilled physiotherapy we can change how freely, comfortably and confidently a child moves.

A good programme helps improve mobility and functional movement, manages spasticity to keep muscles working better, prevents contractures and deformities, supports posture, sitting and standing, and builds the strength and skills that lead to greater independence. Our paediatric physiotherapy service is designed around exactly these goals, always at your child's pace.

Our Approach at Proud Physio

  1. Thorough, child-friendly assessment

We assess muscle tone, movement, posture, balance and function, understand your child's daily life, and set personalised goals with you as a family.

  2. Movement & function training

Through play and purposeful practice, we work on the skills that matter most, from head control and sitting to standing, stepping and using the hands.

  3. Spasticity & posture management

Stretching, positioning and tone-management techniques help keep muscles supple, protect joints and reduce the risk of contractures as your child grows.

  4. Family training & home programme

We teach you how to position, handle, stretch and play with your child safely, so therapy continues at home where it makes the greatest difference.

Consistency is powerful. Cerebral palsy care is a long journey, and the children who do best are those supported by steady, regular physiotherapy and confident, well-guided families. Every session builds on the last, and progress, however gradual, adds up over the years.

Clinic or Home Physiotherapy

For many families, travelling regularly to a clinic with a young child is tiring, and children often respond best in familiar surroundings. Our home care physiotherapy brings expert paediatric treatment into your home across Kakkanad, Kochi and Ernakulam, where we can also adapt everyday spaces and routines to support your child. As your child grows, we combine home and clinic sessions to suit your family and your child's needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physiotherapy cure cerebral palsy?

Cerebral palsy is a lifelong condition and cannot be cured, but physiotherapy makes a real difference to how a child moves, feels and functions. With consistent therapy, many children improve their mobility, comfort and independence and prevent complications such as contractures.

At what age should physiotherapy start?

The earlier the better. Early physiotherapy takes advantage of the developing brain and helps protect movement and posture from the outset. That said, physiotherapy is valuable at every age, and starting now is always worthwhile.

Do you provide cerebral palsy physiotherapy at home in Kochi?

Yes. Home physiotherapy is often ideal for children with cerebral palsy, as they are most relaxed in familiar surroundings. We visit homes across Kakkanad, Kochi and Ernakulam. Call +91 80894 14419 to arrange a home assessment.

Will my child be able to walk?

Every child with cerebral palsy is different, so we cannot promise a fixed outcome. After a full assessment we give you an honest, realistic picture and set clear goals, and we work patiently towards the best possible mobility and independence for your child.

How can we prevent contractures?

Regular stretching, good positioning, strengthening and movement practice all help keep muscles and joints supple and reduce the risk of contractures. We build these into your child's programme and teach you simple, safe ways to continue them at home.
