A stroke can change life in a moment. One day everything is normal, and the next a person may struggle to move an arm, stand safely, speak clearly or manage the simplest daily tasks. For families across Kakkanad and Kochi, those first weeks are frightening and full of questions. The most important thing to understand is this: the brain can relearn, and good physiotherapy is central to that recovery.

At Proud Physio & Wellness, led by Dr. Noora Ameen TA (PT), we provide focused, compassionate stroke rehabilitation that helps survivors regain as much movement, strength and independence as possible, whether the stroke was recent or happened months ago.

What Is a Stroke?

A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, either by a clot (ischaemic stroke) or a bleed (haemorrhagic stroke). Starved of oxygen, brain cells in that area are damaged, and the parts of the body they controlled stop working normally. Because different areas of the brain control different functions, no two strokes are exactly alike.

How a Stroke Can Affect the Body

Depending on which side and area of the brain is affected, a stroke survivor may experience:

Weakness on one side (hemiplegia) Loss of balance & coordination Difficulty walking Stiff or tight muscles (spasticity) Poor arm & hand control Fatigue & reduced stamina Shoulder pain Fear of falling

Many survivors also face changes in speech, swallowing, vision or mood. While physiotherapy focuses on movement, we work as part of the wider recovery picture and will always guide you towards the right support when other specialists are needed.

How Physiotherapy Helps After a Stroke

Recovery after a stroke is driven by neuroplasticity, the brain's remarkable ability to form new connections and relearn lost skills. Physiotherapy harnesses this by guiding the body through the right movements, repeated correctly and often, so the brain rebuilds the pathways that control them.

The brain relearns what the body practises. Consistent, well-guided repetition is what turns effort into recovery.

A good stroke physiotherapy programme helps you regain the ability to sit, stand, balance and walk, improves control of the affected arm and hand, manages muscle stiffness and shoulder pain, rebuilds strength and stamina, and, above all, restores the confidence to move safely.

Our Approach at Proud Physio

  1. Detailed assessment

We evaluate movement, strength, tone, balance, walking and your daily challenges, and set clear, personal goals with you and your family.

  2. Task-specific retraining

We practise the real movements you want back, from rolling in bed and standing up to walking and using the hand, broken into achievable steps.

  3. Strength, balance & tone management

Targeted strengthening, balance work and techniques to manage spasticity keep progress steady and prevent complications.

  4. Family training & home programme

We teach families safe ways to help and give a simple home routine, because consistent daily practice is what drives lasting recovery.

Recovery does not have an expiry date. While early rehabilitation gives the fastest gains, many survivors continue to improve months and even years later with the right, consistent physiotherapy. It is never too late to start.

Clinic or Home Rehabilitation

In the early stages, travelling to a clinic is often difficult. Our home care physiotherapy brings expert stroke rehabilitation directly to homes across Kakkanad, Kochi and Ernakulam, so recovery can begin promptly and safely. As mobility improves, many patients move to clinic-based sessions where more equipment is available. This service works hand in hand with our neurological rehabilitation programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after a stroke should physiotherapy start?

As early as your medical team allows, often within days. Early rehabilitation helps prevent stiffness and complications and makes the most of the brain's fastest recovery window. If your relative is already past that stage, starting now is still very worthwhile.

Can physiotherapy help if the stroke was months or years ago?

Yes. While early rehabilitation gives the quickest gains, the brain can keep adapting for a long time. Many survivors make real, measurable progress with structured physiotherapy long after the stroke.

Do you provide stroke physiotherapy at home in Kochi?

Yes. Home rehabilitation is one of our core services and is especially valuable in the early months. Our therapist brings the treatment to you across Kakkanad, Kochi and Ernakulam. Call +91 80894 14419 to arrange a home assessment.

Will my relative walk again?

Every stroke is different, so we cannot promise a fixed outcome. After a full assessment we give you a realistic picture and clear goals, and we work relentlessly towards the best possible mobility and independence for your relative.

How often are sessions needed?

Most survivors benefit from regular sessions several times a week in the early stages, supported by a daily home programme. We adjust the frequency as progress is made and hand more of the routine back to you over time.
