Some pain sits deep. A tendon that has been sore for months, an ankle that keeps swelling after a sprain, a back that never quite loosens, or a knee that is slow to recover after surgery. TECAR therapy is a modern, drug-free physiotherapy treatment designed to reach exactly those deeper tissues, and it is now available at Proud Physio & Wellness in Kakkanad.

TECAR stands for Transfer of Energy Capacitive and Resistive. A specialised device passes a gentle radiofrequency current through the area being treated, and your own tissues turn that energy into deep, natural warmth. Unlike a heat pack, which only warms the skin, TECAR works from the inside out: it increases blood flow, relaxes tight tissue and supports the body's own repair process.

What TECAR Therapy Helps With

  • Reduces pain: deep warmth and better circulation calm irritated tissue, so pain eases and muscles stop guarding.
  • Reduces swelling: improved blood and lymphatic flow helps clear the fluid that builds up after an injury or surgery.
  • Improves mobility: warmer, more pliable muscles and connective tissue move more freely, so stiff joints and tight muscles loosen.
  • Improves functional activities: with less pain and better movement, everyday tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, lifting, working and playing sport become easier.

Conditions We Treat with TECAR

TECAR therapy is useful for a wide range of muscle, tendon and joint problems, whether they are fresh injuries or long-standing pain. We commonly use it for:

Tendinitis & tendinopathy Acute & chronic pain Trigger points & muscle knots Stiff, tight muscles Post-surgical recovery Sports injuries Sprains & strains Musculoskeletal conditions

TECAR eases symptoms and prepares the tissue to heal, but on its own it does not correct the cause of a problem. That is why we always combine it with the right exercises and hands-on treatment, so the relief you feel turns into lasting recovery.

How TECAR Works: Capacitive and Resistive

The TECAR device has two treatment modes, and your physiotherapist switches between them depending on which tissue needs treating.

  • Capacitive mode uses an insulated electrode that concentrates the energy in the softer, water-rich tissues closer to the surface: muscles, fascia and the lymphatic system. It is ideal for tight muscles, trigger points and swelling.
  • Resistive mode uses an uninsulated metal electrode that directs the energy into denser, deeper structures: tendons, ligaments, joint capsules and the areas where tendons attach to bone. It is ideal for tendinitis, joint stiffness and ligament sprains.

The intensity can also be adjusted. A low, gentle setting that produces little or no heat is suited to fresh injuries and swelling, while warmer settings are used for long-standing stiffness and chronic pain.

A heat pack warms the skin. TECAR warms the tissue that actually hurts, from the inside out.

What a Session Feels Like

TECAR therapy is comfortable and relaxing. A thin layer of conductive cream is applied to the skin, and a small flat metal plate, called the return electrode, is placed under your body or in your hand. Your physiotherapist then moves a smooth handheld electrode slowly over the area, often combining it with massage-like techniques and gentle movement of the joint. You will feel a pleasant, spreading warmth, and the intensity is always adjusted to your comfort. There is no downtime, so you can carry on with your day straight afterwards.

Why the metal plate? TECAR needs a complete circuit. The return plate lets the energy flow from the handheld electrode through the area being treated, and that flow is what creates the warmth deep inside the tissue, exactly where it is needed.

What to Expect in a Session

  1. Assessment

We examine the problem, find the cause of your pain and check that TECAR is a safe and suitable choice for you.

  2. TECAR treatment

We choose the right mode and intensity for the injured tissue and treat the area with the handheld electrode.

  3. Movement & exercise

While the tissue is warm and relaxed, we combine TECAR with manual therapy and active exercises, because this is when it responds best.

  4. Home programme

You leave with simple exercises to keep your progress going between sessions.

Is TECAR Therapy Safe?

TECAR is a safe, non-invasive treatment when it is applied by a trained physiotherapist. As with any energy-based therapy, it is not suitable for everyone. We do not use it if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, during pregnancy, over an area with active cancer, a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis), an active infection or an open wound, or when you have a fever. We take extra care in areas with reduced sensation, and you should always tell us about any metal implants. This is why every course of TECAR begins with a proper assessment. Where it is not the right fit, we choose another option such as ultrasound physiotherapy or myofascial release therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TECAR therapy painful?

No. Most people find it relaxing. You feel a gentle, spreading warmth, and your physiotherapist adjusts the intensity throughout the session so it always stays comfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition and how long you have had it. Many people notice easier movement and less pain within the first few sessions, and TECAR is usually given as part of a short course of physiotherapy. After your assessment we will give you a clear, realistic plan.

How is TECAR different from ultrasound therapy?

Ultrasound therapy uses sound waves from a small probe to treat a targeted spot. TECAR uses radiofrequency energy and has two modes, so it can treat both soft tissues like muscle and denser structures like tendons and joints, often over a larger area and while the joint is being moved. Both can be useful, and we choose whichever suits your problem best.

Can TECAR help after surgery?

Yes. Once your surgeon is happy with your wound healing, TECAR can help reduce swelling and stiffness so rehabilitation exercises feel easier. We check the type of surgery and any metal implants first, and adjust the treatment accordingly.

Who should not have TECAR therapy?

TECAR is not used for people with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, during pregnancy, or over areas with active cancer, a blood clot, an infection or an open wound. Always tell us about your medical history and any metal implants, and we will choose the safest option for you.
